Flu and Cold Fighters
Influenza (flu) and the common cold are both caused by viral infections. Colds tend to have milder symptoms than the flu. Symptoms of a cold can include – sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and cough. Symptoms of the flu are the same as that of a cold, but may also have extreme exhaustion, fever, joint and muscle pain and headache.
Beetroot, Carrot and Ginger
Beetroot is wonderful for stimulating the immune system, reducing fever and supporting the elimination of toxins. It strengthens the liver, bowel and kidneys, helping the body to eradicate toxins. It also stimulates the lymphatic system, which helps to strengthen the immune system. Carrots possess beta-carotene, which is essential in supporting immunity. Ginger root contains gingerols and shaogals, which are anti inflammatory agents that will help to relieve a sore throat.
Ingredients: (for 1 serving)
Quarter of a Beetroot
2 Carrots
A small piece of Ginger (around 1cm)
Method: Juice the beetroot, carrot and ginger together in a juicer, and drink a small glass 2 or 3 times a day.
Peppermint and Elderflower
The main aim of the peppermint is to help in clearing the airways, and enhancing the circulation which promotes sweating and aids in reducing any fevers. Peppermints volatile oils possess an antimicrobial action, that support the immune system. In a similar way, elderflowers help to clear phlegm and catarrh, reduce fevers and strengthen immunity.
Ingredients: (for 3 servings)
1 tsp dried elderflowers
1 tsp dried peppermint leaves (can use fresh leaves)
3 cups/mugs boiling water
Method: Put the herbs in a container and pour over boiling water. Leave to infuse for 10-15 minutes. Drink a cupful 2 to 3 times a day.
Spicy Ginger Tea
This drink is a mixture of spices that help to increase the circulation, ease fevers and aid the body in fighting the infection. It is also a fantastic decongestant for a blocked nose and a congested chest.
Ingredients: (for 3 servings)
3 tsp grated ginger
1 stick cinnamon
5 cloves
5 black peppercorns
3 cups/mugs water
Method: Place the spices and water in a pan, and to the boil. Cover and simmer for around 15 minutes. Strain and drink 3 times a day.
